U.S. Expansion generally

XP is a Charter Member of USI: United States International, which promotes closer trading and other relationships to bring various areas of the world into the Union. This is the place to look if you are interested in forming a statehood-dedicated group but are not sure you want to join the Expansionist Party.

Canada

Canadian flagThe following sites are closely aligned with the Expansionist Party in their program and activities. We are in frequent communication, working together for shared goals.

United North America, a site created by a Canadian from Winnipeg, contains argumentation for union of all of North America and links to a number of fascinating sites, some of particular value to Americans who don't know much about Canada.

Email: unitednorthamerica@unitednorthamerica.freeservers.com

Canada's Brain Drain is a site that asks the tough questions as to why so many of Canada's professionals are heading south.

In addition to the sites above, there are two others relating to Canada that we are not closely associated with.

American Millennial Order advocates that various countries join the United States, for everyone's good. It is maintained by a Canadian from Toronto.

Another site of interest created by Paul Adams is the "Canada Annexed to USA Poll" of Canadian and American opinion on the idea of statehood for Canada. Whether you vote or not, you can see the results to date. There is also an area for comments from visitors.

Britain

UK flagThe Centre for Citizenship is a group dedicated to promoting republicanism and wider democracy for Britain, which understands that much of what was done in the American Revolution should have been done in Britain too.

"Over the past several years, a new term, Anglosphere, has crept into political and social discussion in the English-speaking world. This term, which can be defined briefly as the set of English-speaking, Common Law nations, implies far more than merely the sum of all persons who employ English as a first or second language. To be part of the Anglosphere requires adherence to the fundamental customs and values that form the core of English-speaking cultures. These include individualism, rule of law, honoring contracts and covenants, and the elevation of freedom to the first rank of political and cultural values."

Puerto Rico and the Caribbean

[Puerto Rico flag]There are five major sites for information about Puerto Rico and its relationship to the United States. In addition, the former Governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro Rosselló, had a website which may or may not be removed by the new Governor, Sila Calderón, an enemy of statehood.

Estado 51 (literally, "State 51") is a SPANISH-language "pro-Americano" website that describes itself thus:

"Somos un grupo de amigos puertorriqueños estadistas pro-Americanos, voluntarios, no afiliados a ningún partido político, sin fines de lucro, colaborando juntos por la democracia Americana, la verdad, la justicia, la libertad individual, la propiedad privada, el libre comercio y un mejor Puerto Rico."

We are a group of Puerto Rican friends, statehooders, pro-American, volunteers, not affiliated with any political party, without hopes of profit, collaborating together for American democracy, truth, justice, individual liberty, private property, free trade and a better Puerto Rico.

Estado 51 is a Charter Member of USI: United States International, as is XP.

The New Progressive Party (NPP) (in Spanish, Partido Nuevo Progresista, PNP) is the statehood party of Puerto Rico.  Its website, alas, is pretty much wholly in Spanish —  and was, curiously, badly out-of-date at February 4, 2001. Perhaps it doesn't want to deal with the unhappy news that the NPP was trounced at the polls, after holding the governorship and legislature for the past eight years, in November 2000.

The NPP/PNP held two referendums on statehood in its eight most recent years in power, both of which it lost because it refused to limit the choices of status to statehood and independence, but foolishly permitted the IMpermanent, temporary "Commonwealth" status to remain on the ballot (even if called "None of the Above" on the second referendum). The margin of victory for the present status was very narrow, but Congress has indicated that a margin of victory for statehood would have to be convincing for Congress to make Puerto Rico a state. If you read Spanish, check out their website. If you do not read Spanish, you might ask them to put up on their site an English area of size. Many of the NPP/PNP's leaders speak, read, and write English fluently, so do not hesitate to contact them by email.

The Puerto Rico Herald is a comprehensive statehood site with many links, many news items, etc.:

www.puertorico-herald.org
Email: info@puertorico-herald.org

Puerto Rico 51 is a website ostensibly devoted to promoting statehood. But it apparently feels an obligation to be 'fair' to the enemies of statehood, and so not just links to but actually hosts, on its own site, anti-statehood propaganda!

Email:  (Sam Quirós) webmaster@puertorico51.org

Puerto Rico USA is a website prepared by the Puerto Rico-USA Citizenship Foundation that states plainly that the present political status of Puerto Rico is not permanent, examines the various alternative future statuses, and concludes that the only status certain to secure the U.S. citizenship of Puerto Rican individuals and the firm bond between the island and mainland ,permanently into the future, is statehood. Above two animated flags, of the U.S. and Puerto Rico, this site proclaims:  "These are both your flags. Love them and defend them both!"

Guyana

[Flag of Guyana]Guyana USA, with its associated Committee for an American Guyana, is a group that advocates that the South American nation Guyana, formerly British Guiana, become a State of the Union. We of XP regard Guyana as a cultural island on the mainland of South America that more properly belongs with the West Indies. We would like Guyana to become an eastern mainland anchor for a Caribbean-wide single State, anchored on the west by another cultural island on the mainland (of Central/North America), Belize.

World Federalist / Democratic Federalist Organizations

The following organizations promote federal union or much closer cooperation among democratic countries. Some, like the AUD (immediately below), look forward to world government thru democratic federalism. Others have more limited geographic interests.

English First
http://www.englishfirst.org
jboulet@englishfirst.org

We of XP wish to clarify that we are not opposed to preservng the role of English as unifier across groups within the United States, but we do not believe the U.S. needs to declare English its official language nor attack the use of other languages within the United States. We are secure in the primacy of English in the center of the English-speaking world but we do not want government to bolster foreign languages within the Nation. We want immersion training in English rather than bilingual education, and wish to see English continue to give all immigrants a way to communicate beyond their own group and achieve success in the largest arena.

Just as the "English" language unites groups within the United States, it also has given rise to an enormous international community that can communicate readily on every issue. We would like to strengthen the ties among traditional English-speaking countries, eventually to bring them all into the Union, and to promote use of English as a shortcut to development in the Third World. Other groups promoting use of English include the English-Speaking Union http://www.esu.org/ and its American peer (http://www.english-speakingunion.org). The American E-SU has programs like English In Action, which pairs newcomers to the United States with native speakers to help them learn English with all the nuances.

Europe

Altho XP has not yet ventured into advocacy of statehood for any of the nations of Continental Europe, we definitely regard Europe as a key area for future enlargement of our Union. The great preponderance of our people and culture derive from the many nations of Europe, and we are tied together by history, language, culture, religion, and sentiment. We regard the attempt of some Europeans to create a "United States of Europe" in competition with the United States of America as a danger to world peace that must be stopped. We would gladly offer statehood to all the areas of Europe willing to participate in a larger democratic union, and believe that adherence to the United States is a far wiser long-term goal for the countries of East Europe, especially, than would be admission to the European Union, which might eventually put them on a collision course with the United States.

The Centre for European Reform (http://www.cer.org.uk) is a thinktank in London devoted to improving the quality of the debate on the future of the European Union and seeks to work with similar bodies in other EU countries, in North America and elsewhere in the world. It has set up a trans-Atlantic program that seeks to analyze the key policy issues that affect the US-European partnership, including areas of friction and divergence. The program is headed by Steven Everts (steven@cer.org.uk), Senior Research Fellow.
